Day 75. Today we decided to drive down the Indian Ocean coast to visit the port city of Fremantle founded in 1829. First morning tea and a wander through the EShed Markets set in an historic warehouse. Near the marina and town beach we toured a fabulous maritime museum 'Shipwrecks of WA'. Inside was a recovered stern side section of the Dutch VOC ship 'Batavia' wrecked on the Abrohlus Islands in 1629. Lots of restored canons, ropes, silver coins, ceramic flasks and numerous other items. Also stories of many other Dutch wrecks and ships of exploration - we wondered how close WA came to being a Dutch colony but for the harsh environment and Captain Stirling arriving with English settlers in 1829. Lunch of fish and chips at Sweetlips near the water, then we walked up to the old Round House goal for a great view of the harbour and down High Street. The beautiful old 19th century heritage buildings so colourful and ornate - we noticed WA University of Notre Dame campus occupies whole blocks of old buildings - so many young students about means a vibrant city centre. Sad to leave such a beautiful place so we drove around the old streets several times. Back up the coastal highway we stopped for a walk on the beach at Cottesloe near the old beach pavilion before heading back along the coast to Karrinjup. Dinner tonight a snack. Mild 24 degrees, heavy rain in the morning, drove 70km.
