Day 42. Today we are on a full day tour with Windjana Tours in their big 4WD bus to Windjana Gorge and Tunnel Creek National Parks formed from the 350 million Devonian Reef, a 350km round trip. The lovely aboriginal lady driver Chriserra and her partner Waylan were perfect hosts providing morning and afternoon teas and lunch at the Gorge. We were met by Jimmy, a Bunuba elder and local tour guide, who told us about the Bunuba people and their connection to Windjana Gorge and the legend of Jandamarra who in 1898 turned from police tracker to resistance fighter until he was shot at the entrance to Tunnel Creek after hiding and waging a 3 year war. The highlight of our day was the climb and walk through narrow entrance to the 750 metre long Tunnel Creek using our torches with water knee deep in places. Absolutely breathtaking! Even small freshwater cocs in the underground pools and stalactites spotted with our torches. Also stopped briefly at the ruins of an old police station where the first major confrontation between the early settlers, police and aborigines occurred. Back after dark so Raechel whipped up a quick frittata at our van. Hot 34 degrees today.
