Day 40. We have finally reached the West Kimberley port town of Derby located on King Sound, population 5,000, noted for its king tides up to 12 metres which are one of the highest in the world and unusual boab trees. The port once exported live cattle, wool and pearl shell but now relies on lead and zinc exports. The Kimberley Entrance Caravan Park is all gravel but has very large sites and lots of shade, right next to town. After we set up, our very friendly and helpful park manager Ian helped us with tour bookings for the next few days. After lunch, we toured the town which impressed us as being very tidy and vibrant, with a boab-lined main street and shady parks. The long jetty is a real draw card, so much that we reserved a table for sunset dining at the Wharf Cafe. Barramundi, coconut prawns, salt pepper squid and garlic prawns with our nice pinot grigio a real treat. The live music with the backdrop of the old wharf shed lit up at night created a great atmosphere. Air conditioning in our van very welcome today, hot 34 degrees. Drove 266km.
