Day 65. After light rain overnight in Carnarvon, a day of amazing wildflowers as we headed south towards world heritage listed Shark Bay and the small coastal village of Denham. After lunch at Overlander Roadhouse on the North West Coastal Highway, we turned north again onto the bitumen Shark Bay Road. The fields of yellow, blue and pink wildflowers became even more spectacular as the road crossed over huge scrubby sandhill after sandhill. Our first view of the azure blue waters of Shark Bay, we detoured into Hamelin Pool Marine Nature Reserve to view the Old Telegraph Station of 1884 and to walk amongst the ancient Stromatolites, a glimpse into cyanobacterial life 3,500 million years ago. Next a stop at unusual Shell Beach where the same hyper-saline waters have allowed the tiny Hamelin Cockle Shell to form a brilliant white curved beach 10 metres deep, 1km wide and 120km long. Arriving into Denham mid afternoon we checked into the Blue Dolphin CP for 3 nights with our friends Ross and Robyn just opposite us. A drive around the lovely seaside village before dinner tonight of baked flathead, prawns and oven baked chips with a nice white wine. Drove 350km today, comfortable 24 degrees, cloudy periods.
