Day 80. Up early as we are going on a big day trip south into the tall timber country of the Darling Plateau. It was 1 degree here overnight! First stop pretty timber town of Nannup and then on a winding scenic road following the green timbered Blackwood River valley to the small timber town of Balinyup. The old cheese making dairy made a fabulous treasure trove for knick knacks and timber pieces. These tiny towns have rejuvenated themselves with cafes, shops, old pubs and pretty flower boxes and parks. Next the small heritage town of Bridgetown founded in 1868 for lunch at the local bakery. We just loved walking the streets of this beautiful town where most of the buildings are well over 100 years old. Back to Nannup on another winding forested road, stopping in a Jarrah grove (Eucalyptus marginata) and then a giant Karri grove, magnificent tall species hundreds of years old. Late afternoon we drove through small Capel to reach the giant trees of the Tuart Forest on our way back to Busselton. Amazing rare giant trees (Eucalyptus gomphocephala) all along the coastal fringe with an understory of peppermint trees and masses of white arum lillies. Stopped at Wonnerup House circa 1857 for photos of the old homestead and beautiful grounds, but closed. We were impressed by the new development at nearby Port Geographe Marina. A walk on the beach across from our van park on sunset and then dinner of beef curry with rice. Cloudy cool day 16 degrees, drove 300km.
