We were on our way to Smithers in the rain when we spotted the Fort Telkwa RV Park. Pulled in and ended up staying three nights while we explored the area. Turned out we hadn't packed our ceramic heater so purchased a new one. GOTTA remember to set the thermostat to FURNACE before bed. 5:10 AM - outside temp was 6.1 deg., inside was 12.7 deg. BRRR! Will be looking for a thermostat that is fully programmable.

Downtown Smithers has a central core with Alpine-like building facades and an energetic vibe. We walked around for a while and declined to pay one of the local residents to take his photo. Reminded me of Mexico!

We hiked up to Twin Falls - and whined afterwards - but enjoyed the magnificent view of the waterfalls coming off the glacier. Just up the highway was the Moricetown Canyon where the First Nations are working with government fisheries to assess the steelhead stock in the river. We watched as men captured the fish in long-handled dip nets, determined if they had been tagged and then released them. Lots of tourists watching this show - nice to see a large parking area on both sides of the road so that traffic was not affected. We then took a back road to Driftwood Canyon which has fossil beds. After an interesting rural drive and a short walk in, the fossil beds were anticlimactic. Visitors were not permitted to get anywhere near the shale where fossils were found and we just peered up the hillside at the rock. There were some signs with pictures but ……. not what we expected. However, the drive was nice and the site was very well maintained.

We enjoyed visiting with some fellow campers - both couples came in for a tour of our new home and were very complimentary. Tomorrow, we are off to Hazelton - about an hour away but with lots of places we want to explore.
