Our day started with a wander around Carcross. It is a nice little town with a lot of money spent on making it attractive for visitors. While we were admiring the lake view from a huge deck area, a jeep tour passed by. They literally drove slowly past with passengers clicking away with their cameras. Not one even stopped to appreciate the scenery. Over to the Bistro by the train station, Pat was somewhat surprised when the stir stick he used in his coffee turned out to be fettuccini. Apparently, it is much more compostable that the usual. He also had a currywurst lunch - made with an elk meat smokie. Then on to the train and what a fantastic afternoon!! The sun was shining, there was fresh snow on the mountaintops and we were on a vintage train through mountain passes. We had the last car on the train all to ourselves except for when the conductor wandered in for a chat. Definitely a trip we would recommend to anyone who happens to be in the area. Downtown Skagway has maintained the historic look and is well worth a stroll. We stayed the night in a local hotel and our room did have a bathtub!! Great to have a soak for a change. We went to bed early and heard a ruckus in the streets around 10:30 pm. Dismissing it as 'rowdy drunks', we ignored it. Unfortunately, we missed a tremendous display of the Northern Lights! Ya snooze, ya lose. Lunch the next day was in the Red Onion Saloon where the servers dressed in period costume. Upstairs was the bordello and tours very available - $10 for 20 minutes. Later, we caught the bus back to Carcross. At departure time, we were missing two passengers. Most of the folks on board had come down from Whitehorse just for the day. Eventually, a Swiss gentleman boarded but his German companion was still MIA. They had misunderstood the instructions re where to meet. As we left the downtown area, one of the passengers spotted the missing fellow running towards the bus depot so we trolled the streets all the way back but couldn't find him. The Swiss fellow got off and we departed. We were so glad we had come down by train as the bus ride back was very anticlimactic. The scenery was not as striking and the ambience was certainly missing although one highlight was seeing a family of three bears (mama and two cubs) along the road.
