We slept pretty well in our substitute accommodation. Headed off at 8 for breakfast at the other guest house. Gavin had a full cooked breakfast so was well pleased. There were 5 people from France at the table next to us and Gavin made the most of it by talking to them in French. They said his French is very good. Much to his delight! There was a dentist next door to the guest house so I booked an appointment to get the filling that fell out a couple of days earlier replaced. Tomorrow at 9:20. We wandered up through the streets of Edinburgh. Chris and Di climbed the Walter Scott memorial but at £10 we decided against it. Turned out to be a good plan as it was a very narrow space and I would have struggled with claustrophobia. After some lunch (sandwiched from M&S eaten in the park) we went up to the castle. It is more a collection of buildings rather than a castle as such. Very interesting though. At 1pm each day the 1 o'clock cannon is fired. This is to enable all clocks to be synchronized and dates back centuries. Apparently there is still a working one in Fremantle which I didn't know about. After the castle and a small break we went for a walk up the other side of Arthur's Seat. Then dinner at a pub which had 2 meals for £10. I had chicken and Gavin had bangers and mash. Eating out is very expensive so it's good to find a cheap meal every now and then! And it was really nice! The beer was horrible. The English and Scots favor ale so not a big selection of lager. Not that it worried me of course! And so ended our last full day in the UK. Tomorrow we fly to Bergen in Norway.
