We were up at 6am again as it's so bright. We packed up and drove to the Bellburn Airstrip for the event we've been talking about for some months - the helicopter flight! After a weigh in and brief safety talk, we waited for our pilot Lance to return from a flight. Renee & Eamon were super excited: Renee thought Mum & Dad were looking a bit worried, so she started to look nervous too.
It was our turn to get into the helicopter - it was a bit freaky even walking under the rotating blades. Mum sat in the front with Lance the pilot, Dad sat behind Lance, and Eamon & Renee shared a seat behind Mum. Gradually, the engine got louder and the propeller speed increased. Then we slowly lifted off the ground. Did we mention there were no doors on the helicopter - that's right - NO DOORS at all! We took off high into the air and took about 4 minutes to get over the Bungle Bungles. It was a bit windy so a bit of movement in the chopper, but we all felt very safe. We spent a good 10 minutes over the Bungles, with Lance pointing out many of the features of the Southern End of the Bungles which is where the spectacular beehive shaped domes are - we also flew over areas that can only be seen from the air. Another 4 minutes and we were back to the airstrip, where we made a nice smooth landing. A fantastic experience!
It was then time to explore the Southern End on foot - we drove to Piccaninny and did 2 walks - to The Domes and Cathedral Gorge - the Gorge was amazing with a huge cavern and a pool of water in the middle. We considered another walk, but it was about 40 degrees today, so we just couldn't face it. So our Bungle Bungles adventure was over - we got a couple of things from the Visitor's Centre and got back on the worst road to date. We did the 50k's a bit quicker - only took 1.75 hours!
Back to our hot van on a very hot day and night - gee we wish we had air con.
