We were woken up by a light plane flying across our van, and the odd helicopter taking off. We left the van and headed to the Bungle Bungles with our bags packed for an overnight stay, - it's about 50km to the Visitor Centre in the Park, and it took us 2 hours to get there, so we were travelling about 25km per hour! The road was corrugated, winding left and right, and going up and down like a rollercoaster with about 30 dry river bed crossings.
The advice from the Visitor Centre was to do the Northern Walks first, so we went to the Echidna Chasm first - a very narrow chasm with some fallen rocks overhead! - it was a moderate 2km return walk, and quite pleasant, though of course our 38 degree days continue! From there we checked out the Osmand Lookout, The Bloodwoods Lookout and the Kungklanayi Lookout - all very good lookouts with different views of the northern end of the National Park.
We then made our way towards the southern end of the park, via the Bellburn Airstrip - we looked at the Helicopter tours, and decided to do one tomorrow morning! We got a close up of the chopper and the kids sat in the seat to check they'd fit okay. As we are all new to helicopters, we're all feeling excited and nervous about tomorrow.
We made our way then to our accommodation for the night, which was at East Kimberley Tours' Bush Camp. We had 2 bush tents, each with 2 single beds in it. Our amenities were only a few metres away, and the BBQ was next to us, and the bar just 30 metres away. It was great - we had a few drinks with another family (the place was empty apart from our 2 families), had dinner on the BBQ, and an early night ready for a big day tomorrow.
