Up at 6am, and on the road by 8am to Halls Creek. Checked into the Caravan Park around 10am, and unhitched as quick as possible. We decided to go to the Wolfe Creek Meteorite Site which is a fair drive from Halls Creek, so raced into IGA for some supplies for lunch and got on the road.
The drive to the Meteorite Site wasn't too bad, about 18km of bitumen to the Tanami Road, and about 120km on that unsealed road until we reached the turnoff to the Site. 3 gates and 20kms of a slightly corrugated road, and we arrived. Quick walk up the rim, and that was it really. It's amazing to think a meteor fell here 300 thousand years ago - the middle is particularly odd because it's so green with a ring of trees around it. It's a 50m steepish walk up the side to the rim, and from one side to the other's about 800 metres, however, the path down is not recommended, and we decided it looked a bit too hairy to risk with the steepness, chance of slipping rocks, and the spinnifex all around which is very sharp. Was it worth the drive? Not sure - it was a long way to come - we had no other plans for the day, so all was good.
Once back in Halls Creek, we took the short drive out to China Wall, a natural rock formation which looks a little like the great wall of china - very interesting formation. And that was our day at Halls Creek - we were going spend another night here, but decided to move on tomorrow to Fitzroy Crossing.
