El Questro is a privately owned cattle station about 90 kms from Kununurra. There's a variety of accommodation options including powered sites, camping, bungalows. As our van is not an off-road one and the 16km into El Questro is unsealed, we decided to stay in a bungalow. So we packed our overnight bags for a 2 night stay, secured the van and left it at the Ivanhoe Caravan Park along with the bikes.
On our way out of Kununurra, we had morning tea at a lovely little place called the Ivanhoe Cafe. The journey to El Questro was fantastic with big rising escarpments all the way along the Highway. We turned left onto the well-known Gibb River Road and went down about 20 kms to the Emma George Resort turnoff. The resort looked lovely and inviting, but we had to visit the gorge first!
The walk into the Gorge is 1.6km each way, and the path gets gradually more difficult with large boulders on the path to clamber over - it took about 40 mins to get in and was quite hot, but the gorge and water hole at the end was well worth it, with some water dripping from the walls high above us. We had a nice cooling swim and there were only about 4 other people there, so it was very relaxing, and there was an odd warm waterfall in a little area off to the side. Once we dried off, it was back to the boulders for the return journey! We rewarded ourselves with a cleansing ale and soft drink in the bar area of the resort.
Back onto the Gibb River Road for a short while and then we turned into the El Questro driveway. About 16km down the unsealed but well-graded driveway we came to The Station and checked in to our very nice bungalow which overlooked the Pentecost River. We checked out the nearby swimming holes and laughed as 20-odd cows came across the river to the nice green grass on our side, only to be chased back over by a man on a quad bike - 10 minutes later they were back again!
We had a relaxing beer during happy hour, and had a yummy dinner at the Steakhouse Restaurant. With the now 2-hour time difference, and the sun coming up around 5.30am, we're feeling pretty tired, so were keen to have an early night.
