After a nice breakfast in the hotel, Mum, Renee & Eamon got the Father's Day card and present sorted out and Dad was so surprised!!!
We then drove down the Kakadu Highway where many of the things to do in the area stem from. We were keen to do a Yellow Waters Cruise and arrived at Cooinda in time for the 1.15pm cruise. (The Cooinda Lodge looked like a nice place to stay). Margaret was our boat driver and guide, and she was very knowledgeable about the birds, crocodiles, and flora in Kakadu. It was a very hot, dry day but quite windy so that cooled things down a bit.
During our 90 min cruise, we saw many birds including Whistling Ducks, Darts/Shags, a Black Falcon, Whistling Kites, an Eagle, Jabirus, Pelicans, and Egrets. The lotus flowers were very pretty - the lilies are waterproof, and are used by the aborigines as a bowl. Other nationalities cook with, and eat them, or wear them as hats!
In the crocodile department, we saw at least 15 saltwater crocodiles. We observed a scenario where a male approached a female. The female lifted her head/neck and growled - a noise we hadn't heard from any crocodile (and we've seen a few in the last week). She was appeasing the male crocodile - anyway, he wasn't interested, so simply swam away in his own time, leaving the female to it. If it had been two males, a huge fight would have been on the cards.
We spent the late afternoon at Nourlangie where we did the Anbangbang Gallery 1.5km loop walk. As luck would have it, there was an Interpretive Ranger on the walk and she explained to us about the various art works in the caves, and also about Aboriginal law, family and kinship.
Back home for a quick dip in the pool, and a nice buffet dinner at the restaurant.
