We were standing at No. 1 Stuart Highway this morning, and realised we have travelled the entire highway from beginning to end (Port August to Darwin) - 2,834 kilometres in total: we have officially done "The Track"!
The Land Cruiser was booked in for a service at Toyota, so we got the bikes off the car and organised ourselves for a day of cycling interspersed with various activities. Our destination was East Point, an 8km ride out from the CBD. We took the coastal path out, and rode past Mindil Beach which was empty (quite different to last night's market & sunset); then Darwin High School; and a Water Ski Club - not sure how keen we'd be to ski here! A place called Fannie Bay looked lovely, so we stopped at the "Cool Spot Cafe" for a refreshing morning tea and a spot of shopping for a new bikini for Renee.
We continued on our quest and via a paddock with lots of horses, we made it to the Military Museum - it was very interesting with information about the bombing of Darwin on 19 Feb 1942 by the Japanese which killed over 250 people, many civilians. There were lots of real-life artefacts around including bombers, torpedos, vehicles, etc, and inside there were audios of people involved, and a movie replicating what it felt like to be there: a very realistic experience - we were there for a couple of hours.
On our return journey, we stopped at Lake Alexander - it's a lovely swimming spot and has a great undercover playground. Further on, we couldn't resist returning to Fannie Bay and had a late lunch at the Cool Spot Cafe. We had to keep moving though, to get to the Museum & Art Gallery of NT; there were some great indigenous galleries, a section on the crocodile, birdlife and reptiles in NT, as well as a very interesting section dedicated to Cyclone Tracy which devastated Darwin on Xmas Morning 1974: pictures of the before and after, and a room with a few minutes of audio of the terrifying sounds of the wind and corrugated iron smashing the town around really brought it to life.
We made it back to Toyota around 4.30pm, picked up the car and loaded the bikes back on and sped to Palmerston Water Park. It's a free park and has a huge 6 lane racer water slide - we just got there in time and had about 8 runs - it was great fun and as Mum & Dad found out, the heavier you are, the faster you go - they loved catching up and passing Renee & Eamon! Couple of cleansing ales at the Howard Springs Tavern on the way home, and our 3 days/4 nights in Darwin was over.
