Little Kirsty Ventures to Pastures New
Arrived safely in Kota Kinabalu, East Malaysia, Borneo. Teaching the kids from the orphanage went really well, they could understand most of our instructions- although it may be different here in East Malaysia. Went to a night market, which was total banter. Had so much fun hagglin. Ended up gettin a skirt for about 2 pounds, Gucci shades+oaklies for about 1.50. Had Ozzy Ben with us to help us haggle as he is pretty much fluent in Bahasa. Chez + I got caught in a meega monsoon- so funny, were like drowned rats! We took shelter in a random shop off the market and Chez started freakin me out by sayin that it was just like a nightmare she had and I started gettin jumpy, then I looked behind me + there was an Indian dude like in my face. I actually screamed soooo loud rite@him- peed ourselves stupid. Hillarious at the time. You maybe had to be there. But the poor guy was like "Why are you scared of me?". Too funny. That night we came home to find Mr Bat hangin from our stairs. He was soo cute + was washin himself. Although he did leave some nice droppings for us the next day. Not nice when you're runnin down the stairs in bare feet + slip on them!
Aanyway, as you can see, i have discovered an internet cafe so I can upload all of my pics. Yesterday we flew from Penang to Kuala Lumpur, then to KK. So that's been 5 flights so far. We were picked up from the airport by Penelope, our GAP representative for Sabah. She's been really helpful getting us settle in so far. She's originally from Australia but has lived in Malaysia for nearly 30 years so she hasa bit of a Bahasa accent. She brought her kids along with her to pick us up in their cars (we assume they must be rich cos here, a car costs as much as a house due to the huuuge tax they have on them to prevent pollution).
We're staying in a basic hotel in the centre of KK. There are 8 of us. The city's not very big- centre consists of 3 main streets about 2 km long. Tis more advanced than I thought it would be although I didn't really picture it much before I came. There are a few nice bars/ restaurants along the sea front but the rest are typical Malay restaurants- kinda hot, bit grubby, wafts of odd smells lurking pretty much everywhere.
Luckily my poor tummy gota rest from dodgy food last night as we went to "Little Italy", which is one of the few western restaurants here. Looked really good but I couldn't eat much due to major stomach cramps- which still haven't died down. Went to internet cafe after to upload some pics.
Hada good sleep but woken by bustling traffic at about 7am. Met Penelope and others at 9am to buy Sarongs at the Sunday Market- not just any Sarong- some special bit of material that has to be sewn n tied properly. We're all going to her house tomorrow for "tea" and to learn how to tie them. The boys got kinda tartan/ checked ones, which they're not very amused with as they're English, but that is the style of male sarong here.
Aman and I went to the Scuba Centre to find our about the padi courses and is about 250 pounds each for the 3 day course needed to earn the Padi certificate. They will take us out to one of the 5 islands that we can see from the sea front. We also wana do white water rafting soon so we're gona suss that out asap.
Right, gota go for lunch.
