Little Kirsty Ventures to Pastures New
Sunday.
Up mega early to meet the tour group at 7am to head off to Mantanani island. Once in the mini bus, the guide told us we had a pretty good chance of seeing dolphins on the way to the island and while we were snorkeling, we'd see turtles and the Dugong (sea cow), which is why we paid so much to go on this trip.
The bus ride took around 2 hours along a bumpy road to the jetty. Chatted to an American dude on the bus, who had climbed the mountain the previous day, so was feeling a bit worse for ware. He gave us a few good tips though.
Once at the jetty, we met with a group that were going to go diving off the islands, then headed out down the river in a speed boat. Took another hour to reach the island but oh my it was gorgeous. Palm trees swaying, clear blue/green waters, white sand- lush. We stopped on the island for a few photos then headed straight out to find the Dugong, so we could snorkel with it. Since Georgie and I had had a good night out at BED the night before, we were feeling a little sleepy, so I kept nodding off while we were on the search. The water was pretty rough, so when I did take time to look and see if I could spot anything, I kept thinking the white horses were Dolphins or Dugons. Unfortunately the search went on and on, without anything to be seen. We passed a beautiful little island that looked as if it was off the set of "Pirates of the Carribean" cause it had a funky dark cave gaping from one side. Woulda been cool to take the boat in there.
We stopped at a reef and jumped off the boat to snorkel. The Chinese group that were with us were not amused at the lack of sightings of the Dugong, so refused to dive- they said they only wanted to dive with the Dugong. So most of them stayed on the boat as Georgie and I went to swim with the fishes. Again the coral was a bit damaged by dynamite fishing, but it was the best we've seen yet. Some really cool bright blue stuff and crazy starfish. Georgie saw a lobster and I spotted the biggest nemo house ever- (sea anemone) and lotsa nemos living there. The guide said it was safe to touch it as long as I was careful, it was soo soft.
After a wee snorkel and a play around with our underwater camera, we headed back to the island for a good old Malay bbq lunch.
Had a little lie on the beach but had a nasty big visitor on my mat. Georgie said it was some kinda poisonous spider she gets is aus. We tried to get him away using a stick, but he was determined to drink my sprite. The guide soon flicked him off.
After soakin up some rays, we headed back out to search for the Dugong. Our hopes were getting slimmer and slimmer- I knew it was gona be too good to be true. Ended up stopping for a snorkel again then back to the mainland. The other tourists were not amused. Was quite funny, cause they had all brought oober posh and obviously mega expensive professional underwater cameras with them, and there was Georgie and I with our funky Fuji camera.
When we got back to KK G, me and Aman headed for a Little Italy and indulged in our first ever Little Italy dessert-twas yummy.
I gave the horse riding lady a call to check that the arrangements for our waterfall ride the next day were ok, but she announced that she was in KL at the moment and that she'd supposedly messaged me (which she blatantly hadn't). So anyway, she offered me a free beach ride with the stable girl if I could make my own way to the stables.
Got an early night.
