Wednesday 16th September - Fort Nicholas
We had decided on a cultural afternoon and walked to the end of our street where we were able to cross a bridge to the Fort.
This is a modern walking bridge and spans about 60 metres and is high above the street below. With a firm grip of my hand Jannie looking straight ahead walked very quickly over the bridge without so much as a sideways glance. Well done Jannie.
The Fort was built on the old site of the Chapel of St Nicholas in 1660 on the orders of Louis XIV to curtail the waywardness of the Marseillais. It was never used and remains the most splendid citadel in Provence and is part of the Museum.
The climb to the tower was 92 steps but the 360 deg view from the ramparts was great. Needless to say that Jannie did not join me on the climb and stayed and studied the map.
We had a look at an exhibition of photographs which were not our cup of tea and thanked the Marseilles Pass for the free entry. We briefly watched a movie excerpt being filmed where a motorbike with 2 riders all dressed in black, stopped, the one on the back got off fired a gun and threw a Molotov cocktail before getting back on the bike and roaring away.
