Tuesday 15th September - Chateau d'If
We arrived at the island and the wharf was reminiscent of the wharves on the Cinque Terre, just great blocks of concrete to moor alongside.
We got off the boat and wandered up the steep steps to the entrance of the Fort. Once through we had to present our Marseilles Passes to gain free entry.
We spied a restaurant and a beer was beckoning so as promised Jannie got her beer and calamari and salad. The local beer was called "La Cagole" and the waiter was pleased that we chose the local beer as everyone else was having Heineken.
The calamari was delicious.
We only had about 20 minutes afterwards to explore the Chateau and as there were lots of stairs and it got quite high Jannie stayed down the bottom and I went to see where everyone who was a prisoner here was held.
What was so appalling was the size of the cells. Hardly any room in them at all and some were even hard to stand up tall in.
Lots of photos and a rush to get back to the boat.
