Tuesday 15th September - Notre Dame
In 1853 the new church was built and was consecrated in 1864. An immense gold statue was put on top of the basilica in 1931 in front of 300,000 people and can be seen from all approaches to Marseilles.
The opulence of the interior of this church surpasses all other churches that we have seen. The money that has been poured into this church must have been enormous and quite obscene.
The view from basilica is wonderful and hard to take in as it's not possible to photograph the vista to get a proper perspective.
We got the tram back down the hill and this part of the journey was very quick compared to the trip up. We ended up back on the Quai and went and had a coffee that was not great. We spoke to the owner of the Tabac and asked about coffees and he reckoned that he could not do proper cappuccinos the way the Italians do and I should be asking for 2 cafes in the one cup to get it stronger. Don't know what we are going to do about Jannie's coffee though...
