Happiness Is The Road
It had been a very rough and stormy night but it had stopped raining by the morning. It sounded like we had spent the night in a rather aggressive car wash with the big brushes battering us like crazy over and over again. We awoke expecting to be surrounded by water and floating off down the inlet. This didn't happen but the puddles near the van were massive and our trips to the loo and shower were obstacle courses. We were both knackered as with all the noise we hadn't slept very well. We had brekky and got out of this place. We drove into the centre of Walpole past the sign which exclaimed that the town was litter free. It actually was and good to see. We needed some food and as there are no Woolworths or Coles anywhere near we had to make do with the local IGA Pioneer Store. We needed to buy ingredients for our tea for the next three nights. This was easier said than done as virtually everything they sold was toxic in some way either containing sugar or vegetable oil or both. And then there were preservatives and artificial sweeteners and additives to avoid. Buying healthy food is a serious challenge particularly away from the big supermarkets who have a larger range. After much checking of ingredients and scrutinization we managed to cobble three meals together. Sugar and vegetable oil are in virtually everything and there is no need for them to be. It is scandalous that the food industry is poisoning us and ************e bothers or attempts to do anything about it. After this and with our cupboard and fridge stocked up we hit the road with the intention of staying tonight at Northcliffe which is not far away from Windy Harbour and the rugged and majestic D'entrecasteaux National Park. It was a drive of about 90 kilometres through a landscape of big towering trees and some farmland. We had to stop on the way to let two little calfs cross the road. They seemed to be on the run from the farm. They need to hide behind a tree as we've been telling all cattle on our journey around! The weather was overcast and we drove through a few showers on the way to Northcliffe which is a cute little place. We had decided to stay at the rather wonderfully named Aroundtu-It Caravan Park. It was about two kilometres outside Northcliffe and set amongst the bush and trees. We were greeted by a sign warning of kangaroos and alpacas. This looked good. The owners seemed to have a bit of a sense of humour as there were signs along the entrance road with jokes on them such as :- What do men and floor tiles have in common? Lay them correctly the first time and you can walk all over them for life! The caravan park looked tatty and quirky and it appeared to be very quiet. We had a great vibe about it. The owners house, a lovely traditional place with a big verandah, doubled as the reception and I was greeted by a lovely friendly lady who checked us in and said that we could choose our own site. She had a beautiful, friendly little dog called Sam who seemed very happy to see me. I think that I must now have lost the scent 'eau de postman' as all dogs now seem to love me! We had a drive around and discovered that there was absolutely no one else here. We settled on a site near the amenities which were lovely and old fashioned but very clean. We then went to explore the grounds and discovered a veritable concoction of animals and birds. We first of all saw all the alpacas that were kept in enclosures near the house. There were loads of them and they were gorgeous and very comical. Neither of us had ever seen alpacas this close up before. They were absolutely fascinating. They had long necks and big deep eyes with the girl ones having beautiful fluttering eyelashes. They had beautiful woolly bodies with big fluffy mops of it on their heads. The funniest thing was that the wool around their legs made them look like they had ugg boots on! They all looked at us warily but they didn't seem scared of us. We didn't get too close as we didn't know whether they nipped. Whilst looking at these beautiful creatures we spotted loads of kangaroos grazing in the bush and boing boing boinging past. As always it was great to see these amazing animals. We could never ever get fed up of seeing kangaroos. We then went to have a look at another enclosure and saw the ducks, the chooks and a strutting cockerel. We also saw parrots and the hilarious giggling kookaburras in the trees and flying about. In another enclosure there was a beautiful brown pony who was happy to see us and receive a bit of love. No one else turned up later on in the day and so we had the whole place to ourselves. It was extremely quiet here and this was wonderful after all the noise and annoying people of yesterday. We had an early night and absolutely knackered both of us went out like lights.
