Terry and I finally left El Calafate on Wed afternoon as J and P are due to get their truck back tomorrow and will follow on. El Chalten is a mountain town surrounded by high snow topped mountains and glaciers. The highest Fitzroy is particularly impressive because it's steep sides are too steep for the snow to settle on it. Over the last four days we have done four impressive walks, yesterday's took 6 hours and today's 5 hours. We have seen the mountains in the sunshine and even the ever-present wind has been warm and not too strong. Mind you we do have to sleep with the roof down as it swirls around and the gusts can be quite frightening in the night when the whole van rocks gently!!! J and P finally joined us on Friday evening having paid a huge amount to the garage but at least they are mobile again. The next few days will involve a lot of travelling through very empty areas so we will stock up with food and fuel and then keep driving. The Internet is poor here and I will post this as soon as I can. So we are wind blown and very tired after the walks but it is truly fantastic to be trekking in the Andes and seeing the fabulous scenery. Yesterday we saw a huge woodpecker with a bright red head busy pecking the tree right in front of us ,he wasn't bothered by us at all and then he posed for photos!
