We spent 5 hours following the guide around Tikal and were still left with the impression that we only took in a very small part of the vast ruins. They are very impressive and we were lucky that there weren't many people there that day. Our guide was super and was very knowledgable and he told us lots of interesting info about plants and birds as well. It actually didn't rain that day which was a relief .
We crossed the border into Belize on the Sunday and we were immediately impressed by the calmness of the border crossing and of course the fact that everyone spoke English. It was so simple and straight forward ., mind you the 60 $ to insure the truck for 4 weeks hurt!!!
we love Belize as it is so pretty and laid back . The people are so so friendly and nothing is too much trouble.
I was hurrying down the street on my own and a guy shouted out ' hey there mam slow down you are going too fast' this sums up the ambience!!
We are currently in a place called Hopkins which is by the beach . It is quiet and the locals are very Caribbean and speak with a wonderful lilt.
We won't go any further south but will go up to Orange walk where there are more Mayan ruins and the chance to see manatees.
We spent time in Belmopan which is the capital but is such a compact place it was very pleasant. We have swum in the Blue hole which is a natural pool formed by the limestone rocks. The only downside is the number of Mosquitos and biting insects which seem to get you however much repellant you wear.
Yesterday we spent 1 hour talking to the Mexican Ambassador who very kindly gave us his opinion on the safety of various routes through Mexico. It was helpful!!!
we are staying in theFunky DooDoo hostel and we must have tripled the average age range! Last night we were kindly offered all sorts of things to smoke!!!!!!!! We declined!!!!!! However they are letting us park by the entrance and are only charging us 8$ per truck per night. I think that they are finding us something of a novelty, certainly different from their usual backpackers.
