Day 343 (Wednesday 12th November 08)
Woke up with an amazing view over the river mouth. Had some breakfast and then went up to where the albatross live, the far point of the Otago Pennisula. The centre was closed but was expensive anyway so we just had a look around to see if we could see any flying around. Spotted a couple. Decided to go out to Allan beach as it said it was a good point for spotting the sealions. Drove as far as we could and then walked across the farmers land with the sheep around. Right at the entrance to the beach was a massive New Zealand Fur Seal. Didn't want to get too close as they can be very aggressive so watched it for a while. Back to Hump Puppy and drove up to Lanarch Castle. Expensive to go in so didn't bother but we could see it through the trees. Got a good view of the Otago Pennisula and Dunedin as we drove along the road from the castle down. Drove on and stopped in Waihola for some lunch. There was a cheeky goose around wanting our soup and bread but it didn't get any! Drove onto Milton looking for a campervan park for the night. Found a cheap one but couldn't find anyone around to get keys for the facilities so decided to carry on and try and find somewhere else. Started to think that had been a mistake when we couldn't find anywhere else cheap for ages. While looking drove a long way on unsealed roads out to Waka Point and then Nugget Point. Had a nice walk out to the end and saw some seals playing in the water below. When we were on the road again looking noticed a sign for a campervan park 3km off the main road. Decided to go and have a look. Amazing location and as soon as we arrived the guy came out to ask what we wanted. Said we were looking for somewhere to stay for the night and he said it would be 30 bucks. That was too expensive for us and he knew straight away. Very nicely he said he would go down to 20 bucks. After a look around we decided to stay not that we needed much persuasion. Went for a walk around the site and down by the river and then made the most of having a kitchen and used the power as normal to do some study! There were 4 builders staying there too and they came back later and started cooking up lots of nice smelling food so we soon moved out of there and back to the van as it was making us very hungry! They had a nice dog which liked attention! Played some backpacker and got an early night.
