Fraser island is the worlds largers sand island, therefore there are no proper roads unless at a few of the resorts. the main road is on the 75 mile beach on the east of the island. HOwever we are only allowed on the beach at certain times due to the tide.
Did a three day self drive tour of Fraser Island. After a briefing about the island, the dangers of dingoes, and driving on sand we were divided up into our groups. There were 10 people in each group. I was with Ellie, two other englsih girls that were on our OZ experience bus, an english guy, a german guy, swiss girl and three Chileans. WE then went to the camp shed and talked through all our camp equipment and how to load it corrrectly into the 4wd drive. We then went to the supermarket to get all our food for three days and then headed down to the barge to get the 11am barge across to Fraser Island. During the briefing at the hostel it had started to rain and there was a thunderstorm. Luckily it cleared up a bit by the time we got to the island. On the barge we had to lower the tyre pressure so it was easier to drive on the sand. Once on the island we collected our camping permits and drove to Lake Mckenzie. it was only about 15kms inland from the barge but took us about a hour to reach it as our top speed was about 15km!! the single track was obviously very bumpy and it was everyone first time driving so we were all taking it slow. After our picnic lunch near the lake we walked down to the lake. despite it being cloudy went for a swim in the lake. the water was extremley clear but got deep very quickly so the water looked black. AFter an hour here we decided we should head towards 75mile beach and find somewhere to camp. we were advised to arrive out our camp 2 hours before dark so we had time to put our tents up and cook. On the way to the beach we lost the othe two groups. once at the beach we had to find a camping area. THere are areas that are no campimg areas. It was about 4pm when we got to the beach so we wanted to find somewhere quickly. we saw a few other tents in one camping area just off the beach so we decided that this would be a good area to camp. We unloaded the jeep and put our tents up. shortly after this was done the rain started to come and had to sit in our tents. we where there for an hour or so before the rain eased. we stuck our heads out and thought we were going to be able to cook our bbq for dinner. but rain and thunderstorm started again. we reappeared at 7.30pm and were able to cook our dinner. saw a dingo around our camp and we had been warned that they could attack and when we went to the 'toilet (a hole in the sand) we had to go in groups to be safe. AFter a good bbq cooked on a little camp stove we went to the beach and enjoyed our surroundings and looked at the stars. however by 9pm the rain came again and we were all in bed!!!
