Today i went of boat out to the Great Barrier Reef. It took about 2 hours to get out to the reef that we were going to be diving on. On the boat an instructor talked through some of the basics of scuba diving and the exercises that we were going to have to do and the what was going to happen on the way down in the water. As i had a bit of a cold i was worried about the pressure in my ears and how it may be very painful. When the boat stopped at the reef i but on my wetsuit, flippers and mask. We then jumped off the back off the boat into the water. We had to do several exercises including getting water into our mask and taking the mouth thing out off our mouth. We then held onto a rope and went under the water. has to hold onto the rope and carry on deeper into the water. we then had to do the exercises under the water again. I was told to keep popping my ears every few seconds. However i couldnt pop one ear, however hard i tried and it was very painful and had only gone under the water a few metres. So the instructor thought i was best i came up and didnt go any further. THe pressure on my ears would have made the pain twice as bad on the way up if ui went any deeper. Instead i went snorkelling on the reedf. THis was good, i was still able to see all the coral and all the amazing colourful fish. It was like being in an massive aquarium. Lots of the fish were swimming near the top of the surface and would come very close. AFter exploring this reef, we all had to get back on the boat for lunch, then we went to another reef. Here i saw clown fish (nemos) and lots of other fish that i dont know!! it was amazing to have snorkelled in the Great Barrier Reef and see all these amazing fish in their own habitat. but too quickly the time was up and had the 2 hour return boat journey back to CAirns ahead of us.
