I spent the last three days sailing around the Whitsunday Islands. My boat was called 'Waltzing Matilda' and there were 14 people and 2 crew member on the boat. We left Airlie Marina at 9am and went to Border Island first. We had lunch on the way as we sailed past other islands. When we got to BOrder island we were all issued with 'stinger suits' and told about the dangers of jellyfish and there stings but all still got in the water. As i was used to snorkelling a bit now i was able to relax and enjoy looking at the fish and coral. It was amazing. the reef was in Cateron bay of this islandand where hundreds of fish swimming around. Beautiful coloured ones and would happily swim near to you. After exploring here went back to the boat, had afternoon tea and went to Tongue bay at Whitsunday island where we were going to spend the night. As the sun was setting we had some dips to eat. It was a full moon tonight which reflected off the calm water and was really bright.
After a good nights sleep on the boat as the sea was so calm we were all up for breakfast at 8am and went across to Tongue bay to go to the beach. WE had to walk along the island to a lookout which had the most beautiful views of WHitehaven beach. THe sand is soooo white and the water so clear. It look awesome. From here i could see stingrays in the bay around from the beach we were going to swim in. Unfortunatley this is the most popular area in the WHitsundays so there were lots of people there. HAd to put our stinger suits on and all went for a swim. IT was already very hot and the sea was warm aswell. THe water was very shallow and were able to walk for ages with the water no deeper than my knees. AFter a few hours here we left and went back to the boat. We then went to Maureens Cove at HOok Island. Here we went snorkelling again. The coral here was huge and really beautiful, some of the shapes are amazing to look at.Lots of fish here again. After afternoon teaback on the boat we sailed to Blue pearl bay. ANother colourful sunset and good dinner and calm seas.
Next morning up early so we could go snorkelling at this bay. There were lots of other snorkellers there from other boats so it wasnt as good to see the fish and coral here. Although i i did see a huge maori wrass fish. THere were lots of bigger fish here to see. Didnt spend too long here as there were lots of other people so we left and went to Black Island. WEnt snorkellig here. This island is very small and had a little beach which some of the people on the boat went too. Not many fish here and the tide was quite strong so didnt spend much time in here. Had lunch back on the boat and then had to head back to Airlie beach.
THis trip was really good and was great oppotunity to go snorkelling. However as the weather was sooooo hot and sunny and with no wind we couldnt go sailing probably. Despite this it was really enjoyable.
Went back to the hostel and met Ellie. Later that night we had to change rooms as there was a broken tap in the room which was on full blast and we were unable to turn it off. THere was also a night time visit from a cockroache. NEedless to say we complained to the manager. we had already payed for the next night and booked into another hostel for the rest of the week. So the manager gave us a free night in the resort next door. THis was a nice private room with a nice big bathroom and no cockroaches.
