Hey folks!
I want to say that the Deaf Awareness Week have been a great success for Guyana Deaf community as the week involved various of people in the public and organisations who made the week enjoyable and fun to be part of the Deaf community.
The Deaf people themselves have given a huge part to participate to campaign and raising awareness in the public. They participate in TV interviews, march/rallies, workshops and the fun day.
I also want to say thanks to the organisation who participated in the DAW are: CBR team, Sean's Art School, Deaf Support Group, Guyana Deaf Mission, British High Commission, Speech and Language Dept and Rehabiliation Assistants. I might have left some out, sorry if i forget the organisation or 2, still they are appreicated for all the supports they give to DAW.
Now i would like to give highlights of the DAW as there are so many to go through! so you can look at the pictures to see what happened during the week!! :D
Opening Church service with feature speech from British High Commissioner, Stephen Hiscock, who gave fantastic speech to promote the deaf issues that are not being met and deaf people themselves are really intelligent and can meet anything that required them to do so, adding that communication is the only downfall to them but the communication is not totally their fault, seeing that the public fails to meet their comminucation system. great speech from him and we had lots of reporters and the speech was in the newspaper on the next day!
The tv Interviews was great as we was invited to interview at many different TV channels. Every channels, we tried to included many local Guyanese deaf people to take part of the interview so they can give their own point of view on their community, seeing that they know better about it more than me and Ashton. Some TV companies was impressed with the interview, so they want to make some TV programme for the Deaf community to film about the life there and to support the community language, ASL or GSL etc. that is a step forward to better communication for Deaf people.
The workshops was great but could be better as some of the workshops have less than 5 people attending to learn about deaf community and culutres. but the best one was at CPCE, thanks to Elske and Penina who works there, set up the workshop for their students which contains around 60 of them and we enjoyed it som much and they learned some about the community and cultures.
The fun day with march rally went well but it was around the half from the Deaf Awareness Day but we still made lots of noise and presence ourselves to the community and showing that we want deaf community to be recongised and accepted. the fun day was playing cricket and everyone enjoyed it a lot :D
Thats what happened at the Deaf Awareness Week!! hope you enjoyed reading the postcard and looking at millions of photos :D
