Deaf Guyana
Hey Everyone!!
Am sorry for some delay to put up the messages, postcards and photos. I have been busy with loads of stuffs in Guyana and VSO. I am enjoying myself here and settling down really well with Ashton and other volunteers too. We are getting on really well, they all are learning sign language (ASL) from me and ashton, they are picking it up really well and are eagering to communicate with us all the time to learn new sign every day!! :D We did went on trip together to do bonding at Emerald Tower, (Holiday Resort) and it was really good place, and the site is really beautiful with black lake where we did swim in!! and we also played volleyball in beautiful sunshine! and we all chill out and getting know each others. The evening is great too, we played quiz games and play table tennis with some people. our team came 2nd out of 4. not bad!! lol and we enjoy drinking in the evening until around 12am (I still stick to my bet that i wont drink for a year and still successful so far!!). Also we went out together to town for a drink and two. and shopping together to get know the place better and safer too.
We have also meet lot of deaf people by going to deaf church, work places and socialise places. They are really friendly and are glad to see us coming from England to support them and to work with them to get better deaf accessibility for them. I am sure that u all have read on message board that Ashton and Myself have been on TV and in the newspaper four times already in 3 weeks. Famous!! lol it is great news for the deaf people because the deaf people are not getting fair treatment here in Guyana as the public see us as mentally retard or dumb. Really not good attitude toward to deaf people at the moment. We are going to challenge it and to change it during our one year here.
We have moved into new house last weekend and it is nice house even for Guyana Standard and it does remind us of 1970s!! the furnitures are old fashion and all the styles are old too.. but very nice place to live and the neighbours all are really friendly, making our stay more welcome! :D We have been here for 3 weeks already, we still havent started work yet! will do on monday and we are looking forward to it! gonna be a great challenge for us to integrate the Deaf people with hearing people.
I better get on with my stuffs and will be update very soon with photos (please be patient cos the internet here is really slow, only 56k!! :S) and it will come up soon as it upload the photos!
Ya all, take care and have fun whatever and wherever u are!!
Mwahs
