Retired & Traveling
We both were awake well before the alarm went off this morning. I think partly to do with not sleeping well from being so full and needing to finish packing. Our driver was set to pick us up at 7:30, but I got a text a few minutes after 7:00 that he was on the way, so we said goodbye to Jeanne and headed down to wait. He showed up within a couple minutes and away we went for the airport. Once we arrived, we quickly figured out we needed to be in Zone 3 and were in Zone 5--which doesn't sound like that big a deal, but it was quite a long way from one to the other. We got in a fairly short line, got our bags checked and made our way to security. This line was just a little bit longer but not bad at all. Kathi got pulled aside for a personal pat down and since I was already through, I went to grab her carryon suitcase off the roller and promptly spilled every single thing that was in it out on the floor!! She had needed to open it to remove something for security and hadn't zipped it up again, which I didn't know. Talk about embarrassing! I managed to get it all stuffed back in while she was being frisked and away we went. Both of us were very hungry at this point but didn't have a clue how far away our gate was, so we just kept walking. Next thing we know, we have to que up for another passport check! This brought back memories of the long lines we waited in upon arrival, but fortunately it moved fairly quickly, we got through, and we were hoping this was going to be the last check before boarding. We stopped and bought a sandwich and finally found our gate. Kathi went and bought some more goodies for us to have for breakfast so we could save the sandwich for the plane. It wasn't long after we'd eaten breakfast that we could board. Once on the plane, we settled in for the 11+ hour flight. They served us lunch, which was lasagna--we both had wanted chicken but they were out of that by the time they got to us. We watched a bunch of movies, napped for a bit, and at 5:00 pm Paris time, we ate our sandwiches we had carried on. The attendant brought around a snack about 8 hours after lunch was served, so we were happy we had our sandwiches to hold us over so we weren't starving. Good thing too, because the snack was a nasty looking hot pocket kind of thing, which Kathi said tasted worse than it looked! And it looked pretty bad! I didn't even bother opening mine. We arrived on time and I breezed through global entry but then waited a long time for our luggage to arrive. At least it did! Rich was there to pick us up and even had a nice cold bottle of water in the car for us--such a sweetie! We managed to stay awake until 7:30 pm...which to our body clocks was 2:30 am...not bad for two ol' gals!! What a fun trip! Thanks to Jeanne for being a great hostess, for all the wonderful tours we took and to Rich for letting me experience Paris again! Au Revoir!
