Retired & Traveling
We didn't have to be anywhere at any specific time first thing this morning, so we took it easy and just relaxed. We eventually got ourselves ready for the day and walked with Jeanne over to the Cordon Bleu cooking school. We looked around for a few minutes, took a couple photos and then headed out for Montmarte.
We actually found the funicular (a tram thing to the top) quite easily and it was working, which was a nice surprise since the past several times I've been in Paris, it wasn't working. Jeanne had told me that our subway passes would work, and they did--gotta love those passes!
We looked around Sacré Coeur, and it just so happened that a mass had just started while we were there. They've changed the visiting rules since I was last there--the renovations were done but there were big signs saying not to enter unless you intended to pray. Also--no photos, although I did sneak in one.
We left there and headed over to Place du Tetre, where I wanted to eat some French onion soup at this place that Marcy and I had been before. At first, I thought the restaurant was gone but I was just turned around. We went in, got seated right away and ordered. It was very good--nice and hot, good broth, and a good ratio of cheese to bread. Plus they gave us a small basket of bread to dunk in the broth. We both gave it two thumbs up.
After lunch, we decided to go to the Pompidou Center, which is this crazy looking building that houses all kinds of activities--museums, library, cinemas, etc. We took the escalator all the way to the top and had a beer in the restaurant at the top, where there was a nice view of the city. Not sure if it was worth the $20 we paid for two beers, but a fun touristy thing to do, so I guess so.
From there we went to Les Halles, which was undergoing a massive construction project and we couldn't figure out what it was supposed to be. I'm guessing maybe some type of indoor mall thing. After using the pay toilet, we got on the metro and left.
We wanted to try to go by this restaurant on top of the Montparnasse building but couldn't ever figure out where it was! By this time, we were just plain pooped, so we gave up and came back to the apt. after a bite to eat at the metro stop on our street. We needed it just to make it home!
Jeanne came in shortly after us and brought us the most delicious duck! She had also made some puréed carrots that tasted like the creamiest potatoes--we couldn't believe it was carrots!
If we make it to 8:00 tonight, I'll be amazed. We climbed 34 flights of stairs and walked 15,000 steps according to the fitbit--we are exhausted.
