Retired & Traveling
Our flight arrived right on schedule, but instead of pulling up to a gate, we had to climb down a flight of stairs and take a shuttle bus over to the terminal where our baggage could be claimed. This wasn't so bad, but then we had to go through customs and waited for an hour and 15 minutes to get our passports stamped. I had started running a fever at this point, and felt wretched. We finally made it out and the driver I'd hired could not find us, even with us texting back and forth. We waited another 30 minutes, but eventually found him and were on our way to Jeanne's. Her apt is very nice and we spent a few minutes visiting and unpacking, then we both decided to take a nap. I was really feeling awful, so Jeanne got online and found a pharmacy that was open and just around the corner. Between the pharmacist's broken English and my limited French, she gave me some meds for the cough. I knew this was just a temporary fix, and that I would need to see a Dr. the next day. On the way from the pharmacy, we stopped off at the Convention Metro station. I had read online that if you're planning to use the public transportation system, it could be advantageous to purchase the passé navigo decouverte, which is basically a permanent photo ID card that can be used on the metro system. We had both brought our extra passport pictures and the metro attendant was very helpful in making our passes for us. We paid €21 each and were all set! We were going to grab a bite to eat at the Italian place that's right next to the apt, but they would not seat us because it was Valentine's Day and they said were full, even though at that time they were practically empty--reserved tables. So we found another little café nearby and had a very friendly waiter. By the time we finished eating, my fever had returned and the jet lag was kicking in, so we headed home and called it a night.
