Retired & Traveling
We woke up to overcast skies and there were snow flurries once we actually got outside. We didn't have to meet our tour guide until 9:50, so we were amongst all the commuters this morning on the subway. Forget about getting a seat, we were lucky to have a spot to stand. Our guide was originally from Hong Kong, but has lived in Paris for the past three years and is married to a Frenchman. Her name was Josephine and it turned out that we were her only clients for the day--I love private tours! She showed us where we could store our coats and things and off we went. She explained about the art in the beginning and how one-dimensional it is and how it evolved over time. The gold rings you see around heads depicted in early paintings are representative of the holiest or important people. This enabled the peasants (especially) to recognize someone important in the painting since most people could not read the bible and only knew the stories by word of mouth. Most of the paintings of that time period were also very one dimensional and all the faces, including children, looked exactly the same. This was due to the fact that the artists just weren't very talented. And then along came da Vinci. :)) We saw several paintings by da Vinci and then moved into a little later time period and saw works by David. One of his most famous paintings we saw at Versailles yesterday--the Coronation of Napoleon. It's also on display at the Louvre because he painted it twice! The only difference is that Napoleon's favorite lady (I can't remember what the relationship was--sister or niece) has on a pink dress in the 2nd painting. We saw numerous sculptures and enjoyed learning about the stories behind them. Josephine made them very interesting. We said farewell to her and left for Angelina's to have lunch. We both ordered the French onion soup and both agreed it wasn't nearly as good as the place we ate yesterday. It was too sweet and didn't have enough onions for my liking. However, the desserts made up for the soup--see the photo. Monoprix was next on the list and after a quick run through, we headed for home. We were both tired at this point and a glass of wine was calling out to us. :)) Jeanne brought home beef tenderloin last night so we plan on eating that with a salad, yum!!
