Retired & Traveling
Marcy & I woke up feeling like we'd been run over by a Mac truck. Neither of us slept well at all. We hit the road in spite of feeling yucky and managed to get ourselves to the proper place to meet our tour guide in the area of Montmartre. The most challenging thing was trying to figure out whether we should walk up the street or go the other way once we were off the subway. All the shops along the way were dealing with sex in one fashion or another, some with clever names and others with blatant signs saying, "Porn Shop". Too funny! We spotted the famous Moulin Rouge across the street from where we were waiting for our tour guide and later on in the tour, I finally found out that Moulin is French for windmill. Who Knew?? haha Makes perfect sense now for a name for a topless showplace ....well, sort of... Our tour guide, Tim, was at least 6'8" and very French--extremely knowledgeable about the area and how French Impressionist painting came to be. We toured all around Montmartre and ended at Sacre Coeur, where we explored on our own. The weather was clear and cold and VERY windy, so by this time we were ready for a warm place to hunker down for a while. We ate lunch on the famous Place du Tetre at Cadet de Gascogne, Marcy had the French onion soup and I had a cheeseburger...I should've had the soup, too! Just sayin...The prices here are very high--my burger was $22!!! This does include the tip, though, but still. After doing some souvenir shopping, we were off to visit the Musee d'Orsay. This involved coming down a LOT of steps and then trying to find the entrance to the subway. A large group of high school aged kids were milling about, making it tough to spot the sign--see the photo--but we finally did and were off. The Musee d'Orsay is a beautiful museum housing a lot of famous Impressionist author's works. We both were about to drop after a couple of hours, & decided to head back to Jeanne's apt. We hit a grocery store on the way back and had a supper of Brie and bread, with wine, of course. :)) I think I was in bed by 8:30--still recovering from jet lag. More tomorrow...
