Start of the long drive east - heading across the Nullabor today!

Drove up from Esperance through Norseman. We had lunch here and then drove up to Beacon Hill Lookout. From here you can see a fair way across the area and also see a huge pile of tailings (leftover soil/dirt from the mines). We camped the night about 12km out of Kalgoorlie at Lake Douglas Recreation Area. Thursday 22nd - Arrived in Esperance after a quiet night in a great nature reserve. After a few days of 'free camping' we stocked up on groceries and then went for a drive around town. We went up to West Beach which is a popular surfing beach but not much surf today. The waves crash onto a rock ledge and the surfers have to pull up quick so they don't get washed onto the rocks. After our visit to Wave Rock, we drove down through Lake King and camped at a roadside stop - Overshot Hill Nature Reserve. It is a really large area and we were the first ones there for the night so had the pick of the spots. We chose the one furtherest away from the road (as you do when you have the chance) and set up camp and had a fire to toast marshmallows. Today we took a (not so) short detour to visit Hyden and Wave Rock today. It is a remarkable rock and we took the obligatory 'surfing' photos just like everyone else does!! On the way to Hyden, we passed through Lake Grace - a shallow intermittent salt lake. There are heaps of these lakes in this part of the country that are fenced off so the cattle and sheep don't enter the areas.
