We arrived in Delhi on Sunday morning, and went to our accomodation the Smyle inn in the paharganj area of New delhi. The hotel is as you can imagine, sun starved, smelly and a bit small!! We are only spending a couple of nights here but the area is mental. There's tiny streets jam packed with people, cows and traffic. Reminds us of camden market but with cattle!!
We had a tour today and found delhi was alot greener than first imagined. We went and saw Qutb Minar which is a victory tower built when islam arrived India. We then saw Hamayuns Tomb which was built in the 16th century and is like a small Taj Mahal. We also saw the Lotus temple, India gate, Parlimentry building and a massive park which had lakes but also twined as numerous shrines. The tour was good but our driver got arrested by the tourist police as he was taking us back to our guest house. I had to fill out a statement to make sure he was released.
We went out for our first meal tonight. At night the area is even more mental than the daytime. The smells, lights, beeping of horns, it definatly opens your senses.
The metropolis restraunt was quite surreal. It had a very posh air about it unlike ellies pizza which she can only describe as "tasting like floor", whereas my pasta was 5/10. I think the local cusine is our next step. At this moment in time we feel less anxious about India as we both think throwing ourselves in the deepend in Paharganj was definetly the right step.
Well we're off to Agra in the morning at about 6am so I think an early night is on the cards.
COME ON AGRA!!!!!!
