From Madurai we made our way to the bus station to go to Kanyakumari, we had about an hour and a half wait, during which we sat amongst the most flies we have ever seen!! We didn't even want to talk to eachother in fear we would swallow a mouthful! We also were surrounded by a really strong smell of urine which we couldn't escape (no it wasn't us!) So when the bus finally turned up we were quite relieved to get on it!!! There were some really loud bollywood films playing again and the bus journey took 6 hours and was very crowded and hot.
When we arrived we knew we were going to like it there. Kanyakumari is the most Southern tip of India, it is where the Bay of Bengal, Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea meet together. It was very windy but a quiet little place. We found a room in a hotel that we managed to get for a bargain price (low season). The room is one of the best we have had yet, it actually had a view!!! We had a massive window that overlooked little fishing boats and houses below and a balcony overlooking the Bay of Bengal. We instantly felt relaxed.
We spent a few days here, one day we went over to a temple and statue just off the shore. We had to get a boat there and the crossing was extremely choppy although it only was about 5 minutes long. We got a good view from the temple and when we decided to head back to the mainland, loads of other people did too. We all crammed on the boat like sardines in a tin can. It felt quite unsafe, we weren't that reassured when we only saw 9 life jackets on the boat!! We also went into a internet cafe and found out the owners brother lives in Bognor!!!! (Small world)
Every morning, about 5.30 ish music and chanting would waft through the air from one of the temples just as the sun was beginning to rise, it was quite surreal but lovely and calming. At night the lighthouses beams would slice through the surrounding darkness, we found it quite mesmorising to watch from our balcony.
We found Kanyakumari to be very quiet, and there wasn't much to do but we found it quite enchanting. It reminded us of a little cornish fishing village, and we were glad we went!
Next stop Kovalam.............................
