Go Socceroos
Hello there. Another week has flown by just like that. This means that it's time to write down some thoughts. Maybe not that well structured or organized thoughts but whatever."It's not my issue", like one famous Dutch guy would say.
After returning to Sydney I've had to take it a bit easier than usual due to this unforeseen flu that has been bothering me. It feels like it's going away though so I'll be back in 100 % shape in no time. Greetz to Bob, I took his advice and took care of the pest problem. Right now, I am typing this entry from a local internet café. This is because of two things. First, my current Internet Service Provider (=the Chinese guy next door) has decided not to pay his bills so I'm out of service until he does. Second, I "turned on" an aerosol can in my apartment and it has soon emptied the killer haze that is supposed to take out all living creatures from my bedroom. I will soon step inside and see what has happened. Next on the agenda: "how to kill pigeons that occupy your balcony".
Moving on…I did manage to get some other stuff done as well during the week. The highlight was definitely on Wednesday when I went to see a World Cup Qualifying match between Australia and Uzbekistan with my American friend Rob. The ANZ Stadium that is located at the Olympic Park was the venue with a capacity of over 80 000 people. This is the same stadium you saw during the Olympic Games back in 2000. Almost 60 000 came to see the match and it turned out to be a success for the Aussies…actually, they call their team "Socceroos". Some Jesus-looking guy scored the first goal and then the legendary "Big Harry ja isot satsit" sealed the deal from the penalty spot.
On Friday I saw my first ever Rugby match. The Sydney Roosters play right down the Oxford Street at the Moore Park so you can easily walk to the stadium from where I live. It was an "exciting" rivalry between them and the Parramatta Eels. A quick note for those not too familiar with the Sydney surroundings, Parramatta is a suburban town around 20 km from Sydney. I hope that's correct…anyways, only around 10 000 spectators had shown up which was a bit of a surprise for me as I expected this to be a bigger thing here. Didn't really get all of the rules but it was a nice experience anyway. These guys are huge, and I suspect they've eaten more than just porridge.
OK, time to close this one. Posted some new pics and will write more as the Easter holidays approach. I'm hoping to be able to make yet another trip…keep in touch!
