Day 52 - Cape Range National Park (Kurrajong Campsite)
We headed to Turquoise Bay at 8am and went to the Drift Loop. We had the whole beach to ourselves. With the drift loop you walk south down the beach then you snorkel north with the tide then swim into shore then walk back down the beach and hop back in the water.
We all had wetsuits on so it made the water a bit warmer for us. Bronte didn’t really enjoy it and didn’t like her snorkelling mask so she just played in the sand while we snorkelled.
There were plenty of beautiful big fish and also lots of small colourful fish too. We were lucky enough to see a sea turtle too and it was happy for us to swim above it and watch it eat.
Josh wanted a rest so he played in the sand with Bronte and Rog & I snorkelled together. Rog then spotted a shark so he tapped me on the shoulder and so I swam into shore thinking it was because we were at the end of the loop. When we both got to shore he told me about the shark (which was as big as him) so I’m glad I didn’t see it. We decided that because we were the only ones there we definitely didn’t need to do anymore snorkelling!
We went back to our caravan site for breakfast and to hitch on and get ready to leave.
We left Tulki Beach Campsite at 10am and headed about 12kms south to Kurrajong Campsite (we are site on 10). As we were driving we spotted 2 goanna’s and in the distance we could see whale spouts.
We set-up and then drove back to Turquoise Bay and went for a snorkel in the bay this time. It is a massive bay and there were lots of big snapper and garfish swimming close to shore. The reef is quite a distance from the beach and it wasn’t great visibility so we didn’t snorkel for too long and preferred the drift loop. We had a little swim then walked back around the point to the drift loop.
The tide was really strong so again the kids waited on the sand and Rog & I went for a snorkel. It was very windy and choppy so although the snorkelling was good we only did one loop then walked back to the bay.We all swam and the kids played in the sand and it was very relaxing.
We then went back to the caravan for some lunch and downtime. After lunch we walked to Kurrajong Beach and the wind is howling and the waves are crashing on the outer reef. The water is so choppy so we kept walking along the beach to North Kurrajong and sat in a windbreak watching the water. We spotted a few turtles then wandered back to our caravan via the campground.
The kids played with a travelling family that we have caught up with lots of times now and we met another travelling family.
We didn’t watch the sunset as the wind is still howling and we are over it so we wanted to get inside the caravan.
We had dinner, watched a movie then early to bed.
