Soongies' Great Adventure
Today we drove from Rakovica to Split and then we put the car on the ferry at split for the 2 hour ferry trip to Hvar. We had a couple of hours to wander around Split. We wandered along the waterfront and there were lots of people around. Turns out the Split half marathon was there today - we saw the presentation to the first, second and third place getters. As an added bonus there were plenty of portaloos around because of the event and we couldn't seem to find public toilets that weren't locked so that worked out well! We got some lunch from the bakery and then walked through the old town - there was a lovely vibe with lots of kids dressed up (for carnivale apparently) and music playing. Being a Sunday though, none of the shops were open. We walked through Diocletian's palace which was pretty impressive. We walked a bit more along the waterfront and then decided it was time to head back to the car to catch the ferry, just as it started to spit with rain. The process to get the car onto the ferry was nice and smooth and then on the ferry we did some Scandinavia planning. Once we got off the ferry, our car GPS didn't recognise where we were and initially google maps didn't either so we had to get out our europe map book! Fortunately google maps and then the GPS finally clicked where we were so the map book wasn't actually required! It was a short 20 minute car trip to the accommodation. When we got there, there was no sign or anything so we were a bit confused! Kate knocked on a few doors and eventually figured out which was our apartment. We then strolled into the centre along the coast - the water was so clear - with the intention of finding somewhere to eat some yummy Croatian food for dinner. We soon discovered that hvar on a Sunday night in winter is a ghost town! We tried about 5 different restaurants and they were either closed or not serving food. There were no other places to try that we could see so we went to the small supermarket (one of the only places that were open) and bought some bread, cheese, processed chicken and packet soup to use for our dinner back at the unit. Thankfully our unit had a kettle! Not our most sophisticated dinner but we were relieved we at least weren't going to go hungry in this ghost town.

kentishclan So you actually stayed in Hvar town... even if it was a ghost town as least you didn't end up having to stay at a nudist caravan park like we did! Definitely a 'summer time' tourist place with a clear quiet period in the off season :)
