Today we had the car so decided to travel south. We awoke late around 830am, had a coffee packed our day bags and set off for breakfast in Chora. Sleepy town with not many people around yet at Jasmines it was virtually full! This was the only place we stumbled across open for breakfast. We waited along time for food which was fine but looking back by the time we left we it was noon! Still a lazy day. we had 2 coffees, smoothie, omelet and toastie which came to around €16.
Russ wanted to head straight for a beach but I asked if we could go to Arkesini archeology site so off we went and parked at Vroutsi. Map in hand we found signs in the village for hike 3 and set off, a hot walk, calves hurting as walking down uneven steps. We got to a point where there was a choice of paths but we could not see a red dot nor hike 3 sign. We chose one but looking at the landscape it appeared the site was in front of us so we took photos and turned around, not facing to be honest to walk down further knowing we had to come back up. This remember was after 2 full days of hard walking. So yes we did not probably see the full site but I have to admit without a guide or information boards explaining what you are looking at, we have now come to the conclusion we don't find them interesting.
We decided to head to the southern corner of Amorgos Kalotaritissa Bay. We were hot, red faced and needed to feel the cool water. This is a rare occurrence where you can park near the beach and not have to walk down many steps!! This was good as my calves well, you should see how I was walking, a waddling penguin especially when going down steps! I was in agony. So we pull out our shower curtain, oh don't think I have put this as our top tip yet! Yes we take a cheap white shower curtain as it is large, waterproof and prevents our towels from getting sandy or dirty plus it gives you more room away from hot pebbles,or sand. A great tip a fellow TA person gave me. So the bay was breezy which was welcomed. We apply the sun cream and I go for a walk with camera in hand whilst it soaks in. I cross the road to the bay opposite amused at a couple where the male is trying to,persuade the female to go further in the water with her snorkel mask. As much as he tried she would not though she was sneaky as he swam off thinking she was following and she got out!! It was much calmer the other side so would have been a better
experience for her.
Anyway I joined Russ, the shower curtain, parasol we bought and the goats, yes goats on the beach nibbling at the sand. I grab my snorkel mask, Russ to and we investigate the sea life. Visibility not bad, few fish here and there.
Was I impressed by this bay, yes until we went to our next destination, Mouros a tiny bay on the east coast. Yes you needed to climb down steps, yes it was shingle but I loved it! The small pebbles were so comfortable to lie on much softer than sand, plus no sand in your toes and ....
The water immediately went deep into the most crystal clear water we have seen for a long time. The large boulders continued in the under water landscape as well as on top. It was amazing, as soon as I put my head under I just love the under water landscape even when there are not many fish around.
We snoozed after snorkel, the sun sank behind the cliff face, just love late on in the day, best time. I could now feel the heat of the small pebbles beneath me as I snoozed.
We drag ourselves away and head back to the car, checking the map,of what we must still see! Along the road back home we stop at Markiani an historical site, well just looked like old houses, again without signage.....
We then went to Aghia Triada which was closed but we still got photos. On our way back at a tiny church on the road there must have been a wedding or festival as the cars were all double parked down the road, people on the road side and huddle in the church grounds. It was very difficult to drive through and only just squeezed by.
Being so late back we were treated with a sunset I shall not forget. It was stunning. As we rode higher and higher the sky lit up as the red sun started to sink over Naxos. We were just outside Chora and pulled over to watch, just beautiful, the small Cyclades were so clear including Naxos, just stunning.
Back at Amorgi Studios we quickly showered and headed back in the car to Tholaria. Here we parked and Russ must have wanted to punish me as he took me on a walk all the up and down the hillside village trying to find Pan aroma taverna, (which I add we walked past and he was adamant it wasn't the one!) but using google maps directing us with torch we came back to,it! I didn't say a word. By the time we ate it was 2145! I paid for this with being up for ages as just too full to sleep.
Another enjoyable day on the fab little island.
