We arranged for a lift to Chora and started our walk at 10am returning around 1630. Our app says it was 8.77 miles, ascent 1450 and descent 2580. We start at hike 1a as plan to visit the Monastery tomorrow.
We climb steadily up stone steps towards the summit of Profitis the views of the south, west and east are amazing, you are looking down onto the tiny capital of Chora and the port Katapola. The path is a trail marked by cairns and red dots but is easy to see.
Virtually the whole time you have stunning views of either the east or west swapping the coast line and of Nikakouria Island and Agios Pavlos as you walk further towards Egialis port.
You pass through 2 abandoned villages, the latter, Asfodilitis where the villagers left in the 1960's finding life too hard in the mountains. It is a large area where you can see remnants of houses, terrace farms and telegraph poles with no wires. Here you should take time to look back at the landscape and picture the hardship living here. Look at the high terraced walls, so many of them creeping up the mountain side. I wonder when these were built and how hard it must have been to carve the terraces into the hillside. What was grown here?
After here you reach the village high on the hill side of Apano Patamos and then wind your way down to Kato Potamos before reaching the streets of Egialis. I have to say I struggled here as it is virtually all steps, my calves killed me!
There are a lot of uneven paths on this walk but is is fairly level. Good walking toes covered sandals or boots.
Another fabulous walk which looking at it on the terrain map you can see you cover half the island. The majority of the walk was very windy which was great too but bring something to secure your hats!
The views of this walk are stunning, you can see the small Cyclades and Naxos and as mentioned Lagada and Thorlialia too. We could see on the east the dramatic steep cliffs we had walked the other side of yesterday.
We buy a parasol for the beach but once back at the studios we collapse and catch up on our blogs with a yes you guessed it, Mythos for Russ! Myself a lemon and ginger tea. Enjoying the piece and quiet and ambiance with the star lit sky.
We hired a car on our way into the village for our last 2 days in Amorgos, €25 a day returning at 630am on the third when we catch the ferry to Naxos. We eat and enjoy eagerly stuffed vines, meatballs, vodka, Mythos for €30 at Koralli.
We walked down a couple of bars and sat and enjoyed a cider and Mythos and was thankful for the car to return back as my calves were agony! I walked very funnily down steps!
