Today is my last day in Kalgoorlie before finally setting off round Australia. I mean it has only been 2 months since I arrived in Kalgoorlie...
It started off well, I went and did some shopping (camping equipment, car supplies etc) and bumped into Peter on the high street. He was absolutely flabbergasted that I was leaving tomorrow and I laughed and said I did tell him I was going! After pottering about in 40 degree heat round the shops, Danielle and I went to the Mining hall of fame which is just off the Goldfields highway (Menzies direction.) Not all of it was open but a tour guide had told me that you could get up close to the big trucks there so in we went. Somehow Danielle managed to cut her hand on the door on the way in and proceeded to get blood all over their floor. Kind of funny really since it was a brand new building and only been open for a short while lol.
After Danielle got patched up we went outside to see the big rigs. I still cannot get over the size of these things. They are absolutely massive! I looked like a tiny ant in my photo standing next to the loader, I wasn't even taller than one of the wheels! It was rather hot outside so we kept on moving and I came across the gold panning exhibit. No instructions, so I just grabbed a pan and went for it...talk about boring! I'd definitely not discover gold back in the 1800's I'd get bored too quickly! We decided that after we had seen enough and it was way too hot that we would head towards the Broad Arrow pub.
I had tried to go there before with Damian on our trip to Gwalia but it was already closed when we got there. Anyhow, Danielle and I arrived and it was almost 47 degrees outside! Good job we went to a pub as a cold drink was in order! I went in and it was almost like my ideal pub. Pool tables...check...juke box...check...the only thing wrong with it was it was miles away from anywhere and needed to be reached by car. The walls were completely covered in people's names and random comments from visitors. So in tradition I grabbed a marker pen and wrote mine on a wall outside. Probably won't be there in a few years as it'll get sun bleached or someone with write over it or something. We had a late lunch and then proceeded to drive back to Kalgoorlie with the intent to finish my packing and go to Bushlands Park for the sunset. Sunset at Bushlands was amazing, a little too much cloud cover but it is the clouds which make the suns colours stand out. Danielle and I stood taking pictures on the veranda. We almost didn't make it as I couldn't remember where it was, apparently when I went with Damian a couple times I wasn't paying attention!
We arrived back at the hostel to be greeted by a bunch of people shouting at me 'oh there you are' and telling me 'I had to' go to The Exchange. I said I had some car things to do but said I would be there afterwards. Jamie disbelieved me and I was like dude...in the 2 months you've known me...when have I ever said no to going to the pub!? So we rushed through the packing (mainly throwing everything into a bag which I'm going to pay for later when I want to find something) and went to the pub. A few games of pool in The Exchange and we ended up in Gold Bar...yet again! One by one people were falling away as the night progressed and I said some goodbyes to people who are working tomorrow and walked back to the hostel with Danielle and Darren. I finished packing about 1.30am and prayed the heat would subside so I could get some sleep!
