Today I think has been one of the most awkward days travelling around Australia to date.
I left Carnarvon a little later than planned but I was aiming to get to Gascoyne Junction in the afternoon when I was hoping it would be a little cooler to walk round the Kennedy Ranges. Everything was going well, I took extra supplies with me as I heard they are short on water and sensibly checked all the major fluids in the car before setting off. The road there was a little boring but I did see some random things. A whole family of Emu ran out in front of my car, a mum with 4 babies just strutting across the road, slow enough for me to get a picture at least. As I said everything WAS going well then I arrived at Gascoyne Junction...
I pulled up at the little information bay to have a look around but before I could do that all I could hear was running water. I turned round and there was water leaking out of the bottom of the car! Not just a little bit either it seemed to be gushing out of the bottom! The engine coolant was spilling out into the car park - I knew this because it was green lol. I started to panic thinking I had a cracked radiator or something and quickly drove it into town whilst I still could. About half an hour later several guys from the road works company had taken a look at it and assessed the damage. It was simply a hell of a lot of overflow coming out the bottom. When the car gets too hot the water starts to boil and goes over the marker and is forced down the overflow and out the bottom of the car once it is stationary. Nothing to worry about but something to keep an eye on in case it suddenly empties the entire coolant tank.
However, because of this problem I was advised not to go into the Kennedy ranges park by myself as it was so hot out I wouldn't get assistance if something went wrong as people just don't come up here at this time of year. So I made the decision to turn back and go back the way I came and the Kennedy ranges and Mt Augustus National park will have to wait for another time. I was a little sad almost like a child pointing across the road saying but...but..they're right over there I can see them from here!
My day still did not improve though as I went to sit down in my car and ripped a massive hole in my only pair of combats right across the backside...fuuuck!
I had made the decision though to go straight to Coral bay instead of trying for somewhere else and about 5 hours later (after driving my car through a massive foord) I made it to Coral Bay.
I am only supposed to be in Coral Bay for a couple days but Cyclone Nurelle is still having fun on the coast and I am determined to dive Ningaloo reef so I will wait for as long as it damn well takes!
I got this picture driving to Gascoyne junction of a family of emu running across the road.
