I arrived very sweaty and burnt from the journey from Wolfe Creek about mid morning and checked into the Kununurra backpackers lodge in town. Nice little place with a swimming pool and decent kitchen etc. My first night here was a bit of a bust I think I went to the shops, cooked dinner and went to bed.
My first full day here I had planned to get up early but was talking on the Internet for a while so got up and out a bit later. 8am isn't bad though...at least I thought it wasn't till I went outside walking towards Mirimi National Park. I was roasting! I knew I should have gone out at 6am...never mind.
I arrived at the National Park and took one of the walking trails. The first thing I saw was a sign which had a symbol of a dog and a cat with a red line through it. Ok now I get no dogs in the park but who the hell would bring a cat out here? Anyway, I carried on walking and just then a mother and Joey jumped right out in front of me where they had obviously been eating and jumped up to the rocks. I didn't see too much wildlife like you would expect of a National Park but I am guessing that time of year also has a factor in that. I must have walked all the trails in the park (it's not that big to be honest) and then gone up the hardest trail to the view point. You could see out across the valley including Mount Cyril and all across Kununurra. Which by the way is bigger than a lot of people think. I walked back down and took the short (but seemed long) walk back to town. Couldn't believe it was only 2km, mind you in 34 degree heat with a high humidity 200 yards would seem long!
Decided to stay in the dorm (air conditioning enough said) for a couple hours and venture out again later to the Zebra rock gallery. Yep you read it right, rock which is stripy like a Zebra. Apparently rock only found in the East Kimberley region of Australia. Minor mishap on the way there though. My interior mirror and all it's brackets decided to come smashing down off the windscreen and break over the gear stick. Needs replacing now as well as the lights on the passenger side. Anyway, I made it to the gallery and it was empty, guess another thing which doesn't benefit from this time of year. However they had a mental dog which was only a year old and so cute who followed me all over the place. I took a look round and they gave me some bread to feed the fish outside in the lake. Mental fish also! Diving out of the water splashing me to get me to throw them more bread! I sat down by the lake for a while and watched the clouds pass over head, it really is a nice place and you can see the elephant rock / sleeping Buddah rock at the end of the lake too.
I eventually left and bought the car parts for my car and went back to the hostel. Tomorrow I leave for Northern Territory although I might stop a couple places along the way to see some random things like lakes etc. We'll see.
The picture is of me in Mirima National Park.
