After working last night I wasn't really in the mood for getting up too early today but I had booked myself onto the Super pit tour owned by KCGM. The bus driver seemed really friendly and knew what he was talking about as he gave us an introduction to the pit on the route there. He said for health and safety we had to wear sunglasses and a fluorescent vest so we could be seen on site. Mine was massive and made me look like a giant highlighter but safety is not concerned with fashion lol.
On arrival we went into the site and round to the garage which services the big trucks. We got to see some of them up close and watch one of the smaller trucks hump about the tyres. Each one of those trucks costs $4 million to buy and each one of those tyres costs $40k to buy! No wonder they trust women more than men to drive those vehicles! I immediately fell in love with those vehicles and wished I could get out and drive one! Maybe...someday lol.
We continued our tour round to the first look out stop and got to see all the trucks humping and dumping their loads of rocks. Apparently each one of those trucks may only contain a golf ball size of gold inside weighing only about 500g each. We didn't get to go inside the pit like I wanted to because a blast was scheduled for today. A bit disappointed but we still got closer than the general public would. The rest of the tour involved learning about the crushing and sorting machines at the site. Everywhere has security cameras for obvious reasons!
I had a good day on the tour and I was very grateful that the bus has air conditioning on it as it's very hot in Kalgoorlie at the moment!
