It's been a little while since I last updated from Kalgoorlie. Since my last update I now have a job working in the York hotel on Hannan street behind their bar. The hours are not ideal but the people are friendly and I am earning money instead of just sitting about!
A few things have gone on since so I will stuff them all into one entry.
Remembrance Sunday came round and this time the 11th actually fell on a Sunday. I chose to go to the service here in Kalgoorlie although no one else wanted to come, I felt some sort of strange duty to attend. It was held at the memorial just outside of Kalgoorlie train station. I wasn't expecting anything like the Beaconsfield service with hundreds of fully dressed service personnel but I realised it was a small gathering and so they'd do their best. It felt a little weird standing there with a load of people all dressed in shorts and t-shirts instead of winter coats but the bugle player played the last post brilliantly. I was also quite proud to see the UK flag flying up next to the Aussie and Kiwi flags.
Another tradition they have here in Kalgoorlie is the St Barbara's parade. This is also combined with the Christmas parade through the streets of Kalgoorlie. The whole mining community comes out in force and giant trucks are driven through the streets. I was a little gutted that I had to work but I sent a couple people out with my camera to get some pictures (Damian and Geoff) I was just hoping that they weren't all going to be of the inside of the Exchange and nothing else lol. I did get to see the biggest truck from the door of the York though and was amazed at the size of it! It was a little surreal seeing a Santa on a motorised vehicle wearing a pair of shorts and a wife beater but I guess even Santa adapts when it's hot outside! I went up to the Exchange and of course to an already drunk pair of friends and walked them both back to the hostel before calling it a night. I will admit now though that they did take some nice pictures although some of them were rather random I really could have done without the 'we lost your camera' joke when I arrived...Damian.
