I left Monkey Mia relatively early in the day resisting the temptation to see if the dolphins were there again in favour of getting on the road in case the weather turned badly. After checking with the WA road service and discovering all the roads were open I set off. The journey to Carnarvon was boring and this is becoming a not so random theme of driving by myself...Carnarvon I soon discovered on arrival was worse than any other place I had been to. Simply in that I had arrived before 1pm and everything was closed or about to close. I checked and it wasn't a Sunday so couldn't figure out what was going on! The people in the pub just sort of almost laughed at me when they said it was normal. I checked into the hostel and yep, I can see why this place doesn't get great reviews.
The dorms are clean but you are only given a base sheet for your bed, no blankets or pillows. Each wall seems to be a different colour and paint peeling from each suggests that at one point they were all the same colour! OH and some guy told me he had his car stolen last night from outside...however this I believe was really his own fault for leaving the keys inside thinking this town was trust worthy. I mean, did we morph back to the 1950's and someone didn't tell me?
Thanks to Tropical Cyclone Nurelle I am now spending two nights in Carnarvon and then travelling on to Gascoyne Junction on Monday morning to the Kennedy Ranges and Mount Augustus National Park. By the time I come back I should think that Coral bay will be accessible again from the main road and I am looking forward to some RnR time scuba diving!
