I hadn't intended on going to Wolfe creek but I made it to Halls Creek visitor centre and asked if it was open as I had heard many things before saying it was closed between certain months of the year etc. The guy said that yes it was open and that you can get there in a 2WD although he said he's not sure whether it's recommended or not. Well...that was it. Never mind the part of not recommended in a 2WD...he'd basically given me a green light to go, for me to decide not to go he should have said no its closed! So off I went!
The road seemed a little corrugated which I expected to be honest and to begin with it didn't seem as bad as the entrance to Kalbarri National Park. However, I misjudged the gaping holes in the Tanami road...the massive dips in the ground where the flood planes are...the amount of wandering livestock aimlessly just standing there as I approached...then...it got dark...
I thought I would be able to make the 130km to the crater site before it got dark. Nope! 130km is a bit further away than I thought it would be especially when you're not doing the speed limit on a road worthy enough to be a rally driving circuit. I made it to the entrance to the reserve (still another 20km to go from there) and my heart sank as I saw what looked like a locked gate. Luckily it wasn't and you could just open it and close it behind you. In I went and it wasn't till it was dark in the arse end of nowhere that I noticed only one set of lights working on my car, the drivers side. s***.
Earlier in the day when I first started driving down the Tanami road I laughed at a sign which said careful driving techniques required...no kidding. I managed to drive straight into a muddy foord because I didn't see it and then realise I had to cross a creek in my banger car. Luckily it was dry but it was still very bumpy. When I finally made it to the crater site it was pitch black apart from the giant moon on the right hand side. It was kind of eerie to begin with because it reminded me of a werewolf movie with freaky looking clouds strewn all over it. Meh. The campsite wasn't much better (even though it was free lol), nothing but an Eco toilet and a few trees. The moon was so bright you could see for miles and hear my squeaky little car coming for miles too! I parked up and chose to sleep in the car as I couldn't see to set up a tent anyway. It was a long nights sleep, you could hear every little thing around you in surround sound.
I eventually fell asleep and managed to randomly wake up just as the sun was coming up. Perfect! I had no alarm because my phone was flat (sounding like the makings of a slasher movie here...Wolfe Creek 2 anyone?) but I hurried to get ready and went over to the crater. It's much greener at this time of year than some of the photos make out. I walked along the top as the sun came up and then went down the rock face into the centre of the crater ignoring all the signs that said not recommended due to loose rocks...pah! There seems to be a theme developing here...
I set off again down the road not long after the sun came up as I have to drive to Kununurra. I told a few people where I had been and they thought I was crazy, must watch this stupid movie at some point to see what everyone's flapping about! I think I got a bit over confident with the road on the route back, it was more dukes of hazard style on several occasions as I came skidding down a couple parts almost sideways but managed to correct the car in time before anything bad happened. Damian would have loved this! But then again if he were here we'd need a lift because he'd probably destroy the car lol.
The picture is of me at the edge of the crater at sunrise.
