Most of today was taken up by flying. I left the hotel in Tripoli at 10am and went straight to the airport. Checked in with no issue, despite the fact my flight was leaving half an hour early. I had a bit of trouble finding the gate as there were no signs in English and no one spoke English.Thankfully, a nice young official who had no doubt witnessed me circling the airport approached me and assisted me through customs and up to the gates.Again, as always in Libya he did not want anything in the way of money for this service and seemed only too happy to help. That's the last of that attitude I'll get for a while I thought.
I got to the gates and there were no signs telling me which gate to go to. I sat down and had something to eat and then sat down to see what would happen as my boarding time approached. At my boarding time a man came through the doors and started yelling "el Qairah, el Qairah!", thank goodness I know that Qairah is the Arabic way of saying Cairo.About a hundred people in the waiting area got up and started to run towards the now open doors at the back of the room.We all hurried down a long, green, grey corridor (silently laughing to myself and having another quiet "What the hell am I doing?" moment) and through another set of hospital looking swing doors to sit in another waiting room for another half an hour before the flight to Cairo left.
I got on the plane and we took off, the flight was pretty uneventful and it did feel a bit weird to be covering a distance by flying rather than driving. As we were rising into the air we flew over several derelict planes sat parked abandoned on the runway. The plane flew over into the desert and I saw more abandoned dusty jumbos, one with a giant singed hole in the middle, almost like it has been blown up.As we were descending, we flew over Dashur and Giza and I saw all the pyramids from the air. It was really amazing.
I had to hang around at the airport for a while, as the flight had left early and my transfer had not yet arrived. I managed to eventually find him and then drove back to the Ramses II hotel. I went to my room and had a bit of a nap. I then came out and had a bit of a chat with the guys on the desk, including Abdul, the owner. He actually offered me a job, working as the hotel in house travel agent. The money was good and it was an awesome opportunity, but I turned it down, so I can come home to Ben. I still can't believe an offer like that just landed in my lap.
