Today I took Mum and Dad over to the West Bank, I managed to get us a taxi driver with air con for 100 pounds, which is good in Egypt. Our first stop was Medinet Habu, the temple of Ramses III. I was again overwhelmed by the first pylon and marveled at how deep the hieroglyphs are cut into the rock. I think Dad was impressed and liked the colours that are still visible on the temple ceiling.
We then had a drink in the café next door and the owner showed us his pet hawk "Horus" and we had a bit of a chat with him.
We then proceeded onto the Workers village and tombs at Deir el Medina, which was something new for me and something I had learnt about in high school with Mr. Wright. It was interesting to see the village after only ever looking at floor plans and line drawings.
We went in the tomb of Senedjem which was amazing, I had no idea how small it was and how many magnificent representations are crammed into such a small place. Dad and I went into the tomb of Irunefer, which was a bit bigger than Senedjem's tomb, but not as colourful, although it did have one of the only representations of what the ancient Egyptians though of the component of the soul, called the "shadow".
Our final stop in the West Bank was the Ramesseum, which I think Mum really liked. We had a look around and just sat inside it up against a pillar, listening to the pigeons cooing with the echoes of their wings flapping around the stone and enjoying the peace and quiet.
We went back to the hotel and had a stroll down the Corniche trying to see if our cruise boat was in. We were unforgivably hassled all the way down the street. I turned off into the main area, which my parents were not prepared for. I took them to Oasis café, which they liked. A little haven playing jazz music amongst the absolute chaos.
I opted for an early night as I decided to book in Abydos and Dendera with Julio and am leaving at 8am tomorrow. This will be the final dream.
